It had been about 3 1/2 months since we first found out and one thing we were not going to let go of was going back to Bulgaria to visit your father's home. A place far away. A place, not necessarily easy to get to. A place of beauty (and one of which I can't wait for you to experience).
The day we left for our month long excursion was the same day we got to visit with you! The hard part was we were about an 1 1/2 hours from the airport. We just barely made it there. But thank God we did! Our first stop was in Barcelona. We arrived there after a long 9 hour flight and when we did it was HOT outside. And humid too! I was not feeing well and neither of us had slept on the plane, so we were tired too! However, we put that aside and stepped out to adventure through the city! We saw the Basilica de Sagrada Familia - a Catholic Basilica that has yet to be completely constructed, though its construction began in 1882. The architect Antoni Gaudi, died in 1926. We also visited an authentic seafood restaurant. I had a hard time ordering... they didn't quite understand what I wanted... but it was still good. Your father enjoyed it! From there we went to the beach and relaxed for a while. The beach was warm and beautiful and packed with people. We ended the day by walking along the beach and getting some ice cream. We did a lot of walking that day and boy, was I tired, but it was still a blessing to see a new city! We got back to the airport, hopped on another plane and soon we were off to Bulgaria! Just kidding.... We stood in line at the airport for almost an hour. Once we got to our gate, it had changed twice. After we finally found the right gate, we had to sit there for about another hour. They finally let us on the plane, only to tell us that the air conditioning was broken and they were trying to fix it. We sat on the plane for about another hour, before we finally left! Thank God! We finally arrived in Bulgaria around 1 or 2:00 am, went to bed around 4:00 am and attempted to get up for church the next morning! We made it but missed most of church. Afterwards, we spent some time exploring Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria, it a beautiful city to explore - especially the city center. We didn't stay long though... we made our way to the bus station, and waited for a bus to take us to Plovdiv... the ride was about 2 hours, but not bad. We met some people from England on the bus, so I was able to speak English. This was also my first encounter with the kindness of Bulgarian women. This one lady approached us with a very maternal and loving personality... and we were strangers. She gave us some tips and advice and shared a bit of her own story! She ended with offering us blessings and good health. From their your grandfather picked us up and we made our way to the village in Asenovgrad. This was only day 2 of our journey... and we were exhausted, but excited to be there! That night we stayed up and visited with your grandfather and settled into the village home where your great-grandparents lived, only a few short years ago!
